Many plants produce small proportions of wax in their tissues, in their pollen, and in their seed, but it chiefly appears as an excretion upon their leaves, stems or fruit. In some instances this secretion is abundant and is of great importance to the plant; in desert plants it provides a surface coating which retards evaporation.
